If your boss was the hottest rock star on the planet, would you mix business with pleasure?

I’m Meg Stiles. This is my leaving party. And that song we’re making a mockery of? That’s written by one of the biggest rock stars in the world. And I’m moving in with him tomorrow. Seriously! I am not even joking.

Well, maybe I’m misleading you a little bit. You see, I haven’t actually met him yet…

No, I’m not a stalker. I’m his new PA. His Personal Assistant. And I am off to La-La Land. Los Angeles. The City of Angels – whatever you want to call it – and I can’t bloody believe it!

Celebrity PA to wild boy of rock Johnny Jefferson, Meg’s glam new life in sun-drenched LA is a whirlwind of showbiz parties and backstage passes. Cool, calm Christian, in town to write his famous friend’s biography, helps keep Meg’s feet firmly on the ground. But with Johnny’s piercing green eyes and a body Brad Pitt would kill for, how long will it be before she’s swept right off them again?

Johnny Be Good is the prequel to Baby Be Mine and, like all good disorganised people, I managed to read these books ‘the wrong way round’.

Baby Be Mine is high in the charts at the moment so I had bought it and devoured it before realising there was a ‘back story’ in Johnny Be Good. Having to find out the history between Meg and Johnny, I bought this prequel immediately.

The opening is fantastic – we are straightaway thrown into Meg’s excitement at landing her super new job as a celeb PA to an international rock star.

It was great in this book to get more of an insight into her celeb-PA world; the parties, the rock star madness, the paparazzi, the groupies. This was touched upon in Baby Be Mine but not such an integral part of the story.

Another difference between the two novels was that I found Johnny more likeable in Baby Be Mine.

In Johnny Be Good, there is all the chemistry and fierce sexual tension but also some moments where Johnny’s cold behaviour is very infuriating. Toon painted this very well though, as the reader could understand Meg’s magnetic draw.

Poor ol’ Christian had a hard time in the novel and the fact that my sympathies lie with him is testament to Toon’s writing. I suppose I would have liked to see more flirting or chemistry between him and Meg though – or a longer stint at the end when Meg spends time with Christian.

This was another engrossing novel from Toon and both books can be enjoyed equally as much (no matter which way round you read them).

In fact, Toon’s novels have that marvellous quality of wanting to hurry to the end to find out what happens, yet not wanting the book to finish.

‘He’s not mine, is he?’ That’s the question I fear the most. You see, I have a secret. My son is not fathered by my boyfriend, but by one of the most famous rock stars that ever lived. And he doesn’t even know it.

One-time celebrity personal assistant to wild boy of rock Johnny Jefferson, Meg Stiles is now settled and living in the south of France with her doting boyfriend Christian and their son Barney. But they’re living a lie – a lie that will turn their lives upside down and inside out – because as Barney reaches his first birthday, Meg can no longer deny that her son is growing to look more and more like his rock star father every day, and less and less like Christian, and sooner or later, the world is going to realise…

When Meg’s little boy reaches the grand old age of one, there’s no denying something – he looks nothing like his father. That’s because his real dad is rock star Jonny Jefferson. As Meg tries (and fails) to keep this secret from adoring ‘dad’ Christian, it’s interesting to see how Toon manages to create a heroine that is both unlikeable, yet evokes sympathy.

I loved the writing style of this book. The immediacy of the first person, present tense makes it feel like a diary entry, which sucks the reader straight in – especially given the confidential and salacious gossip involved. When Jefferson visits Meg (who used to be his PA) he recognises the resemblance immediately and consequentially, the trouble begins.

This is a roller-coaster of a journey, taking Meg from France to LA to wild parties to witnessing potential suicide-in-the-bath moments.

The sexual tension and rising chemistry between Meg and Jonny is the main crux of the story and I love the off-hand manner in which Meg treats him when other adoring fans and colleagues simper in his presence. An absorbing plot and unique characters made this an unputdownable read for me.
