The World According to Bob
James and his street cat Bob have been on a remarkable journey together. In the years since their story ended in the bestselling ‘A Street Cat Named Bob’ James, with Bob’s help, has begun to find his way back to the real world.
Almost every day, Bob provides moments of intelligence, bravery and humour, at the same time opening his human friend’s eyes to important truths about friendship, loyalty, trust – and the meaning of happiness.
In the continuing tale of their life together James shows the many ways in which Bob has been his protector and guardian angel through times of illness, hardship, and even life-threatening danger.
As they high five together for their crowds of admirers, James knows that the tricks he’s taught Bob are nothing compared to the lessons he’s learnt from his street-wise cat.
After enjoying the first book about James and Bob, A Street Cat Named Bob - a story that not just documented the life of one man and his cat, but opened my eyes to what life is like for someone trying to get their life back on track after living on the streets – I was excited to see what this second instalment would bring.
Much like the first book, the story is woven together through snippets of James and Bob’s current life, and James’ situation before Bob came along. It leads you through their time selling the Big Issue, securing a book deal and finally creating a nice life for themselves that’s a far cry from their time on the streets. Along the way Bob and James experience some tough times, and James’ quest to better himself and make a nice life for the two of them isn’t always an easy one. He experiences illness, trouble with the Big Issue and the dangers of street life.
What I like so much about The World According to Bob (as with the first book) is that it’s written in a very frank way: there’s no self pity or wallowing about the situations that James has found himself in throughout his life. Instead it provides the reader with an honest insight into street life and makes you think twice about a lot of things. The love James has for his cat is clear to see, and it’s enough to make your heart melt!
If you’re after a feel good read, The World According to Bob will provide you with just that – and I guarantee that within just a few pages you’ll fall in love with Bob.
